Residential Living

The University owns and manages a 23-unit apartment complex, the Central Avenue Apartments, adjacent to and within a short walking distance to campus for the use of our GIS students and visiting faculty. The complex is composed of a mixture of single-story furnished duplexes and cottages clustered around a private driveway. There are 9 one-bedroom and 13 two-bedroom apartments, with one apartment occupied by the University’s resident property manager. Residents share the use of a private swimming pool that is restricted to the Central Avenue Apartment residents. Students are strongly encouraged to live in GIS housing as it affords a sense of community and camaraderie unique to our MS GIS Program. No pets/animals of any kind are permitted in GIS Housing.

University policy is to have housing assignments made on a first come first served basis. The one-bedroom apartments historically have been in high demand, so it is important to return your housing preference form as soon as possible. In general, one student is assigned to each bedroom in the complex, affording single students the opportunity to share a two-bedroom apartment. However, other arrangements are possible, particularly for students who wish to bring their families. The monthly rental fees, which are competitive with the local rental market, are set according to the particular apartment size and nature of occupancy. The following rates have been set through August 2014:

Option # Rate Description Rate Type Monthly Rate
A 2-Bedroom apartment, shared with another student Double $771 - $827
B Private 1-Bedroom Apartment Single $1,091 - $1,147
C Private 2-Bedroom Apartment Family $1,363 - $1,463

Please note that first priority on private two-bedroom apartments will be given to students who are bringing families.

    These rates include:
  • Bedroom, living room and dining room furniture
  • Campus high-speed network connections in each bedroom and living room
  • Kitchen appliances including stove, refrigerator, microwave, and basic kitchenware
  • Laundry facilities on-site
  • Use of the pool
  • Heating and air conditioning units
  • Weekly bathroom cleaning in each unit
  • Individually keyed bedroom doors
  • Utilities - Electricity, Gas, Water and Trash
  • Apartments are cable ready (students are responsible for cable and telephone)

Since these are long-term residential units, no linens are provided. Residents need to provide their own sheets, pillows, blankets, towels and kitchen linens. Mattresses are double/full size.

Meals
For students who do not wish to cook their own meals, full meal service is available daily during the regular undergraduate semesters in the Irvine Commons in the center of campus. See Bon Appétit Food Service for more information.
