The University of Redlands' Master of Science in Geographic Information Systems Program
is a one-year intensive program designed for professionals seeking to enhance their
existing academic foundations with a comprehensive understanding of geographic information
science fundamentals and the use and application of GI technologies.
Key Program Components
Theory & Analysis
Gain a thorough understanding of the fundamental theory and concepts upon which
GIS technology is built. Our courses provide the necessary foundation to apply GIS
to a multitude of problems.
Technology
As technology in GIS is quickly changing, the MS GIS Program is proud to provide
training through Esri instructor-led courses in various Esri products including
ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Server. Our faculty will also teach fundamental
software development.
Practical
Application
All students in the program must complete a major individual project that addresses
the needs of a real-world client. The project is comprehensive and involves requirements
analysis, database and systems design, software development, systems implementation,
and eventual deployment.
Instruction is provided through a mixture of lectures, written exercises, seminars,
practical work, and individual and group projects. A final Major
Individual Project integrates and demonstrates students' newly attained knowledge
and skills.
Graduates can choose to become GIS practitioners prepared for positions as project
managers, applications specialists, and applications software development team members.
Those who continue as professionals in other fields will be fully competent to integrate
geographic information technologies into their work.
