The Salton Sea Database Program (SSDP) provided decision support and outreach to stakeholders engaged in the restoration of California’s largest inland water body. This saline wetland is a crossroads for multiple-use issues, including ecological value as habitat for migratory birds, complex seasonal hydrology tied to the Colorado River, and intensive recreational use. The Redlands Institute created an infrastructure of data management and analytical tools to support coordinated decision-making for professional and scientific stakeholders involved in the restoration effort. The Institute also developed the informative, graphically compelling Salton Sea Atlas (ESRI Press 2002), as an outreach tool for decision-makers and the public, to improve understanding of the environment and of the alternatives proposed to restore the Sea. In 2005, the Institute received additional funding from the EPA to design a web portal that would provide complete access to the science, resources, and maps contained in the Salton Sea Atlas.
