Salton Sea Atlas. Based upon a stakeholder needs assessment, a hard copy atlas was determined to be an effective means of public and decision-maker outreach to promote a better understanding of the environment and of the alternatives proposed to restore the Salton Sea. The hard-copy atlas provides a graphic, non-technical medium to describe the physical and cultural geography of the Salton Sea. Available online from ESRI's GIS Bookstore. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1589480430

Salton Sea Digital Atlas. The Salton Sea Digital Atlas contains over 300 GIS data sets; along with GIS software tools for viewing and manipulating this information are included. An interactive Macromedia Flash™ presentation, “The Salton Sea Story”, integrates much of the material previously published in our hardcopy “Salton Sea Atlas”. Also included are a Salton Sea Image Catalog, PowerPoint® presentations, 3-D videos, and the programs to view these files. Bibliographic citations, some of which have been supplied as readable files that the user can bring up in a separate window with a single click, allow the user to verify selected references when first exploring the Atlas. http://www.spatial.redlands.edu/salton/WebAtlas/SaltonAtlas.html

Salton Sea Knowledge Portal. In 2007 the Redlands Institute’s Salton Sea Database Program web site was completely redesigned to update material, web enable the 2004 Digital Salton Sea CD Atlas, and make documents, images, and GIS available for download http://www.spatial.redlands.edu/salton/

Awards

  • Winner of Best of Show as well as the Best Interactive Digital Map award in the Professional Category; Salton Sea Digital Atlas - 2004 American Congress on Survey and Mapping (ACSM-CaGIS) Map Design Competition. The intent of the Digital Atlas is to provide participatory agencies with basic data and tools for spatial analysis and decision support, as one component of a wider range of informational products and services offered by the SSDP. This Atlas is replete with animations and artwork that should engage the interest of the general public, yet provide sufficient GIS data and background scientific support to properly inform scientists, stakeholders, and the general public about the state and value of the Salton Sea, and the effects of various restoration alternatives.
  • Third Place; Best Multimedia Application; Salton Sea CD Atlas - ESRI User Conference 2004. Following the hard copy Salton Sea Atlas, the digital interactive Atlas that was distributed in CD media for use by schools, managers, scientists and the public to help explain the complex nature of the Sea, and the equally complex historical and contemporary cultural and environmental interactions that have resulted in the Sea's current condition.
  • Outstanding Special Exhibit; Salton Sea Atlas - ESRI User Conference 2002. Produced as part of the EPA funded Salton Sea Database Program, the hard-copy atlas provided a highly graphic, non-technical medium to describe the physical and cultural geography of the Salton Sea in a manner that could be easily understood by lay public and decision makers.
  • First Place; Best Group Presentation; Salton Sea Database Program - ESRI User Conference 2000. Saving the Salton Sea, A Case Study in GIS Modeling. The Bureau of Reclamation commissioned the Center for Environmental Management, University of Redlands, Redlands, California, to see if GIS technology could be used to help save the Salton Sea. The university used the ModelBuilder functionality included in ArcView Spatial Analyst 2 to explore one proposal to pump saline water from the Salton Sea into nearby dry lake beds.
