The simplest decision hierarchy consists of an overall goal and perhaps a few criteria arranged in a single level. The criteria in this simple structure directly evaluate the attributes of the alternatives being considered. More complex decision problems may require the evaluation of numerous critieria, in which case it can be advantageous to structure the criteria into a hierarchy of criteria, subcriteria, and possibly subsubcriteria.
